Assembling Electronic Components

This site is not for you if you are looking for the cheapest offer in Europe. Assembling Electronic Components is the master long-tail keyword when it come Electronic Manufacturing Services, but the less undestood.

There is the common misconception that the best solution is to address the cheapest EMS company around you. By the way assembòling componets is a machine-based process, right? Well, as a matter of fact, it seems not the case! Lets us dive into it.

WHAT IS SMD ASSEMBLY?

SMD assembly is the manual or automated process of placing surface-mount electronic components on a printed circuit board. The electrical connections will take place after moulding the solder paste in an oven, following a precise temperature profile.

In the picture, you can see [1] a RESISTOR size 0805, [2] a CHIP in a SOIC package,  [3] a MICROCONTROLLER in a quad 64-pin 10x10mm, [4] a CERAMIC CAPACITOR size 0805.  [5] a LED INDICATOR, and [6] a SOLID TANTALUM CAPACITOR in a so-called 'B' package.

HOW DO YOU INSTALL SMD COMPONENTS?

Manually, it can be done by using precision tweezers, a low-power soldering iron, a microscope, and a soldering paste. Automatically by feeding the assembling robot (a so-called PICK & PLACE) with components arranged on reels.

MISCELLANEOUS SMD COMPONENTS

Various packaging solutions are adopted according to the sizes of the SMD components. Some reels can contain up to 10.000 components. Some elements are arranged in special plastic tubes.

HOW ARE  SMD COMPONENTS PLACED?

By hand, you can make a good placement if you work with the help of a microscope. With a special pneumatic handler when it is about automatic placement. The speed of an automatic PICK & PLACE machine is breakneck: over 100.000 per hour.

The market leaders in this field are famous brands like YAMAHA, FUJI, PANASONIC, JUKI, ASM PACIFIC, and SIEMENS, only to mention a few. The global business of these machines will rise above several billion USD in the next 10 years.

WHAT ARE THE SIZES OF SMD COMPONENTS?

The tendency is to transform all electronic components into SMD. This is not an easy task for microcontrollers with over 100 pins, is it an easy task for power components capable of carrying big currents. The most common package is 0805. It stands for 0.08 Inch by 0.02 Inch. This means about 2.0mm X 1.3mm. When it is about a high level of miniaturisation, typical of mobile phones, the component's dimensions are smaller: 0402, 0201. When it comes to high power, no surprise to find the metric package 8536, which stands for 85mm X 36mm. Only an expert technician can design printed circuit boards with these components.

In the above image, the MICROCHIP MK32 DEVELOPMENT BOARD features miscellaneous SMD component sizes. In general,  small components are mandatory when there is reduced available space, and the length of the tracks is reduced as much as possible. The SMD assembly cost does not particularly suffer because of component sizes or board dimensions. A bad placement design of the components may largely affect the SMD assembly cost when you need to assemble thousands of boards.
